House Extension, Grove Park

This tight-knit, busy family – with two teenage sons – wanted a major new living space in which to chill out together, or with friends, acting as a free-flowing link between their well planned garden and the kitchen. It was a tough Brief as the rear of the house faces north-east, and so is in shadow much of the day. The budget was £35k excluding fittings.

The rear wall of the kitchen was knocked out and a glazed slot and a rooflight introduced on the west side to allow late afternoon sun. Privacy and impact were maximised by the contrast between a curved wall, over 450mm thick on one side and two totally sliding/folding, full-height glazed screens for the other sides, with a single slim corner post where the two screens met. The entire space flowed out level onto an extensive deck, creating a sense of endless, indivisible space.

A random slate floor, white marble kitchen worktops, oak panels and finishes gives striking contrast on a limited palette of colours. Efficient under-floor heating and an integrated computerised light and sound system provides the luxury touches of modern living.

The family now virtually live in this space!

The project has led to a string of commercial and residential projects for them and their close friends.

What the client said:
Like many architects, Stephen works alongside his clients, but it’s his inspirational response to exploring a design from the very outset that creates momentum to many challenging projects.

He fully  interpreted our Brief, but also evolved his designs as different aspects of the project evolved

He was exactly on time and understood the potential administrative issues with planning etc and had allowed a realistic buffer to accommodate these

Stephen has always been very competitive, but brings the full weight of his experience and advice

He did more than add value, he inspired some of the foundational directions of the design, after hearing what we wanted.”
